As the name implies, advocating on behalf of a quality urban environment
is fundamental to the mission of the Design Advocacy Group.
We derive our advocacy positions based on consensus at our monthly open
membership meetings and among the Steering Committee members.
To advance its advocacy agenda, DAG uses a variety of tools. Developers,
government officials, planners and other interested parties are regular
guests at DAG's open monthly meetings, where a free and frank exchange
of ideas is encouraged.
In addition, DAG conducts regular public forums on important issues. In 2003,
DAG hosted "Pride of Place," a pair of well-attended public forums on the
design and planning issues important in Philadelphia's mayoral election. In
2004, DAG managed the Penn's Landing design charrette, in conjunction with
Penn Praxis and the Philadelphia Inquirer. This year, working with partners
including the Willliam Penn Foundation, the Center
for School Study Councils at the University of Pennsylvania, The Philadelphia
Inquirer and PennPraxis DAG will co-sponsor The Franklin Conference on School
Design. The conference, a program of the Penn Institute for Urban Research and a joint project of PennPraxis and the CCCS, consists of a series of forums on
the planned Philadelphia School District Capital Program.
DAG also provides expert testimony before government agencies, writes
frequent letters to government agencies and to newspapers expressing its
positions, publishes regularly in newspaper op-ed pages and was a primary
contributor to City Space, a weekly column in the Philadelphia
City Paper. To view DAG's press coverage, click here.
